The University of Oxford’s distinctive structure, born of its history, is a source of strength.

Oxford is a collegiate University, consisting of the central University and colleges. The central University is composed of academic departments and research centres, administrative departments, libraries and museums. The 38 colleges are self-governing and financially independent institutions, which are related to the central University in a federal system. There are also six permanent private halls, which were founded by different Christian denominations and which still retain their Christian character.
The different roles of the colleges and the University have evolved over time.

The Colleges

  • Select and admit undergraduate students, and select graduate students after they are admitted by the University.
  • Provide accommodation, meals, common rooms, libraries, sports and social facilities, and pastoral care for their students.
  • Are responsible for tutorial teaching for undergraduates.

The University

  • Determines the content of the courses within which college teaching takes place.
  • Organises lectures, seminars and lab work.
  • Provides a wide range of resources for teaching and learning, in the form of libraries, laboratories, museums, computing facilities, and so on.
  • Provides administrative services and centrally managed student services such as counselling and careers.
  • Admits and supervises graduate students, and examines theses.
  • Sets and marks examinations, and awards degrees.
The collegiate system is at the heart of the University’s success, giving students and academics the benefits of belonging both to a large, internationally-renowned institution and to a small, interdisciplinary academic community. It brings together leading academics and students across subjects and year groups, and from different cultures and countries, helping to foster the intense interdisciplinary approach that inspires much of the outstanding research achievement of the University and makes Oxford a leader in so many fields.

Michael Gove urges schools and colleges to watch for signs of abuse....

School radicalisation warning

New warning for staff working with children to look out for signs of sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation, radicalisation, and cyberbullying

The education secretary, Michael Gove, has written to all schools and colleges in England urging them to be alert for signs of radicalisation and exploitation of students.
In a letter to headteachers, Gove warned that schools and colleges needed to be aware of any type of abuse of children and should not think that it could not happen to them.
He said the government had published advice on different types of abuse and neglect, including child sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation, radicalisation, and cyberbullying, among others.
Gove wrote: "The guidance reiterates that staff members working with children should always think 'it could happen here' where safeguarding is concerned."
The updated advice said that everyone who dealt with children and their families had a part to play in keeping youngsters safe. "School and college staff are particularly important as they are in a position to identify concerns early and provide help for children, to prevent concerns from escalating," it said.
The new advice contained links to existing guidance from different organisations on a range of issues, including one from "Channel", which is part of a government strategy to protect people at risk of being radicalised.
The document said: "Channel is about protecting people from radicalisation into all forms of terrorism, but the most significant threat to this country is from al-Qaida affiliated, influenced and associated groups."
It suggested there were a number of indicators that an individual was involved with an extremist group or cause, such as changing how they dressed or their appearance, losing interest in friends or activities not associated with a particular ideology, and their behaviour becoming focused on an extreme idea or cause.
It also said that those at risk of being radicalised might possess material or symbols associated with an extremist cause (e.g. the swastika for far-right groups), spend increasing time in the company of other suspected extremists, or attempt to recruit others to their cause.
The Department for Education's new advice said that everyone working in a school or college should be aware of the signs of abuse and neglect "so that they are able to identify cases of children who may be in need of help or protection" and can take action.
In a specific section on female genital mutilation (FGM) it said that all professionals needed to be "alert to the possibility of a girl being at risk of FGM, or already having suffered FGM".
It added that girls at risk of the practice may not know they were in danger.

ASUU Condemns Attack on Protesting Lecturers, Urges FG to End ASUP& COEASU Strike,

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to urgently resolve the contending issues that made lecturers of poytechnics and colleges of education embark on strike.

The ASUU President, Dr Nasir Fagge, made the call on Monday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the state of the nation.

Fagge said it was imperative for government to resolve the issues involved in the interest of the Nigerian people and the development of sustainable education.

He condemned the method being used by policemen to disperse the peaceful protests embarked upon by ASUP and COEASU members.

He said the unions were only matching to the National Assembly complex to deliver their letters of protest.

"This is one of the ways that the unions will attract the attention of the public and press home their demands.’’

He added that ASUU therefore condemned the attack by the Nigerian police on the protesting members of ASUP and COEASU.

The ASUU president also urged the Federal Government to evolve a comprehensive strategy in curbing the insurgency in the country.

``These include socio-economic development and education, pursuit of humanistic socio-economic development with the goal of fulfilling the needs of the people.’’

Fagge also called on government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted schools girls from Chibok, Borno.

Change your JAMB-UTME Course/Institution

WARNING: Please read this entire document before proceeding. This process can only be done once and changes can never be undone.

My school cannot help you rectify errors and will not be liable for any errors made outside using our procedures for your JAMB change of course/institution as state below.

My school offers the full JAMB change of course/institution procedures and we cannot collect scratch cards you get outside to offer this service for you. If you follow our procedures as exactly stated below, be rest assured that your changes will be done exactly how you want it to be.

We have begun helping candidates to change their 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice courses or institutions. These changes are done by our staff, and our changes are done to reflect on the JAMB System immediately.

Reasons why you may want to change your Course or Institution

There are obviously three good reasons why a candidate may need to change his/her jamb choice of course or institution or both:

Case 1A. Due to Low UTME score:

After the release of Jamb results, the next thing to face is post-UTME and admissions. Now take for instance that someone applied for a federal university who will probably fix a cut-off mark of 200 and above; if such candidate scored less than 200, it simply means he/she has lost the admission. In this case the change of institution to a state-owned/private University becomes necessary. State universities generally fix cut-off marks below 200.

Case 1B. Due to Low UTME score:

Just like case 1A above, this happens when a candidate chose a very competitive course like Law, Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Engineering, etc. Several courses have greater number of applicants than others and such courses invariably attract very high cut-off marks. To avoid being left aside a candidate is advised to go for change of course within the same institution/faculty.

Case 2. Incomplete O'level results

In this case candidates who may have ran into deficiency of required credit passes in some key/relevant subjects may decide to go for change of course to accommodate themselves.

Case 3. Mistakes during registration

Was there a mistake while filling your registration by either you or the business/cyber cafe? With this help, you can now correct any errors made during registration of your course or institution.

Case 4. Other causes

These includes several factors ranging from finance, change in Geographical locations, Parent's suggestions, Fear of Tribal differences, etc. Such cases treated under this heading result to change of institution.

How do I apply for change of Institution/Course?

My school educational services in her bid to maintain her status as Nigeria's number one education/students resource community hereby announce her willingness to assist candidates who may wish to change their courses or institution or both.

Please note that a school Staff usually CALLS to confirm your selection. So please provide a working phone number while applying.

Interested candidates are to follow the steps below:

1. Make a payment N4,000 (Four thousand Naira Only) using your JAMB Registration Number to replace your actual name on the bank teller into our official bank accounts listed below:

48 Nigerian Prisoners Pass O Level Examination While In Prison

According to the reports, 48 out of the 102 prisoners who took the exam, have passed the General Certificate of Examination which was taken in the end of 2013.
Emmanuel Bamidele, the Deputy Controller of Prisons, reported that the prisoners were successful in taking the exam in November/December 2013. This was stated to the Ikeja Branch of Nigerian Bar Association, the NBA, on Monday.
Moreover, Bamidele told to the NBA members that: “when they finally regain their freedom, they can seek admission into any university of their choice, since they are awaiting trial.” The NBA members came to prison to present the gifts they prepared for inmates as one of the activities planned in the Law Week 2014.
Bamidele noted about the prison programme ‘Rehabilitation, Restoration and Reintegration’, and that one of its aims was to provide all the prisoners the chance to get good education for them to be useful for society as soon as they leave the prison.
It was noted that there were 1761 people in prison, while only 186 were convicted and the rest have been waiting for the trial for 5-13 years.
Monday Ubani, the Chairman of NBA Ikeja, stated that he is assuring the inmates that the prisoners waiting for trial would be free soon as they promised that Justice Ayotunde Phillips, the Chief Judge of Lagos State would visit the prison in May to grant parole.
“NBA is in contact with the chief judge and the Ministry of Justice, and we know that names of those to be released are being compiled,” he said.
